The Children’s Health Defense Team is devoted to the health of people and our planet. Our mission is to end the childhood health epidemics by working aggressively to eliminate harmful exposures, hold those responsible accountable, and establish safeguards so this never happens again.

We do what we do for many reasons. Some of us have children who have been injured. Some of us have seen an injustice and feel the need to step in where others fear to tread. Some of us are focused on the demand for scientific integrity, others on improving the health of this, and future, generations. Some of us are eager to help any way we can. But the one thing we all share is our passionate belief that we have public health policies and practices that are harming our children. For the future good health of our children and planet, we call for more research and transparency. Read our personal stories below and join our movement.

Before completing his residency in internal medicine, he served as a battalion surgeon in Vietnam, where he was decorated for valor. Dr. Dossey helped establish the Dallas Diagnostic Association, the largest group of internal medicine practitioners in that city, and was Chief of Staff of Medical City Dallas Hospital in 1982.

An education steeped in traditional Western medicine did not prepare Dr. Dossey for patients who were blessed with “miracle cures,” remissions that clinical medicine could not explain. In his 1989 book Recovering the Soul, he introduced the concept of “nonlocal mind” — mind unconfined to the brain and body, mind spread infinitely throughout space and time. Since then, “nonlocal mind” has been adopted by many leading scientists as an emerging image of consciousness.

Dr. Dossey’s ever-deepening explication of nonlocal mind provides a legitimate foundation for the merging of spirit and medicine. The ramifications of such a union are radical and call for no less than the reinvention of medicine.

Dr. Dossey is the former Executive Editor of the peer-reviewed journal Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine, the most widely subscribed-to journal in its field. He is currently Executive Editor of the peer reviewed journal Explore: The Journal of Science and Healing.

In 2013, Larry Dossey received the prestigious Visionary Award by the Integrative Healthcare Symposium, that honors a pioneer whose visionary ideas have shaped integrative healthcare and the medical profession.

Dr. Matthias Rath, MD

Dr. Matthias Rath, MD is an internationally renowned scientist, physician and health advocate. His scientific discoveries in the areas of heart disease, cancer and other diseases are reshaping medicine. He is the founder of Cellular Medicine, the groundbreaking new health concept that identifies nutritional deficiencies at the cellular level as the root cause of many chronic diseases.

Dr. Rath, born in Stuttgart, Germany, comes from a modest background. His parents were farmers who passed their humanitarian values on to their children. After graduating from medical school Dr. Rath worked as a physician and researcher at the University Clinic of Hamburg, Germany and the German Heart Center in Berlin. His research focused on the causes of arteriosclerosis and cardiovascular disease.

In 1987, Dr. Rath discovered the connection between vitamin C deficiency and a new risk factor for heart disease - lipoprotein(a). After publication of these research findings in the American Heart Association journal “Arteriosclerosis,” Dr. Rath accepted an invitation to join two-time Nobel Laureate Linus Pauling. In 1990 he went to the United States to become the first Director of Cardiovascular Research at the Linus Pauling Institute in Palo Alto, California.

The two scientists became close personal friends who shared common humanistic values, including their determination for peace and justice. Shortly before his death in 1994, Dr. Pauling stated that Dr. Rath’s discoveries would later be seen among the most important of the 20th century.

At that time, Dr. Rath and Dr. Pauling contacted pharmaceutical companies in order to make sure that these discoveries were being implemented globally in order to save as many human lives as possible. Negotiations took place with executives of Hoffman LaRoche, the world’s largest manufacturer of vitamin C and other global pharmaceutical manufacturers. While acknowledging the research, all manufacturers contacted refused to support implementation of the discoveries for fear of competition with their in-house patented drugs.

In order to finance the scientific confirmation of these discoveries Dr. Rath decided to start his own research institute in concert with his long-time colleague, Dr. Aleksandra Niedzwiecki. The Dr. Rath Research Institute in Santa Clara is financed today exclusively by people who have benefited from the research conducted and the natural health programs developed at the institute. Over the past decade the Dr. Rath Research Institute has become the leading institution of its kind in the world.

In order to distinguish himself from the profit-driven pharmaceutical investment business with diseases, Dr. Rath assigned all shares of his companies to a non-profit foundation. The revenues of the Dr. Rath Foundation are being used to support research and education in natural health and related humanitarian efforts.

After having been attacked for more than a decade from the stakeholders of pharmaceutical medicine, media and politics, his achievements are now being internationally recognized. Dr. Rath is a member of the New York Academy of Sciences, the American Heart Association and other professional scientific organizations, and he has recently been invited to serve as reviewer for several international scientific journals.

Throughout his struggle against special interests, Dr. Rath and his team was supported by patients and the public who early on had recognized the significance of his discoveries for their health. His popular health books “Why Animals Don’t Get Heart Attacks” and “Victory Over Cancer” have sold millions of copies in all major languages.

Searching for a treatment brought Dr. Wahls past many medicines, supplements and prescriptions, all of which led her to ask: “What if I redesigned my diet so that I was getting those important brain nutrients not from supplements but from the foods I ate?” Thus, The Wahls Diet, and The Wahls Protocol, were born. Within a year of beginning her plan (Dec. 2007), Dr. Wahls was not only walking, unsupported, again, but completing 18mi bike rides.

The Wahls Foundation supports research and provides education to the public and medical community about the connection between the food we eat, our toxic load, our stress management practices and the health we have or do not have. Teaching methods include seminars, workshops, digital resources, internet pages, and print resources.

Independent Science News

“Independent Science News is an important window for the truth seekers in an age when corporations have manipulated science to protect their profits at the cost of precious lives.”Vandana Shiva, PhD

In no field of human endeavour is this more true or more important than in the subjects covered by Independent Science News (ISN): health, food and agriculture. At ISN we choose our stories carefully. Most concern simultaneous manipulations of the scientific process, the food/ag system, and the science media. These stories are deep: they have evolved, often over decades, they have often cost their perpetrators hundreds of millions (sometimes hundreds of billions) of dollars to organize, and required extensive research to uncover and understand.

Rhonda Patrick, PhD

Rhonda Patrick, PhD did her graduate research at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital where she investigated the link between mitochondrial metabolism, apoptosis, and cancer. Her groundbreaking work discovered that a protein that is critical for cell survival has two distinct mitochondrial localizations with disparate functions, linking its anti-apoptotic role to a previously unrecognized role in mitochondrial respiration and maintenance of mitochondrial structure. Her dissertation findings were published in the 2012 issue of Nature Cell Biology.

Dr. Patrick trained as a postdoctoral fellow at Children’s Hospital Oakland Research Institute with Dr. Bruce Ames. She investigated the effects of micronutrient (vitamins and minerals) inadequacies on metabolism, inflammation, DNA damage, and aging and whether supplementation can reverse the damage. In addition, she also investigated the role of vitamin D in brain function, behavior, and other physiological functions. In February of 2014 she published a paper in FASEB on how vitamin D regulates serotonin synthesis and how this relates to autism.

Dr. Patrick has also done research on aging at the Salk Institute for Biological Sciences. At the Salk she investigated what role insulin signaling played in protein misfolding, which is commonly found in neurodegenerative diseases.

She frequently engages the public on topics including the role micronutrient deficiencies play in diseases of aging, the role of genetics in determining the effects of nutrients on a person's health status, benefits of exposing the body to hormetic stressors, such as through exercise, fasting, sauna use or heat stress, or various forms of cold exposure, and the importance of mindfulness, stress reduction, and sleep. It is Dr. Patrick’s goal to challenge the status quo and encourage the wider public to think about health and longevity using a proactive, preventative approach.

Robyn Openshaw teaches people the benefits of eating 60-80% raw, mostly plant-based, whole-foods lifestyle. She keep it positive and provides time- and money-savings tips.

Her personal story:

It was 2001, and my life was at a stand-still.

My little boy had been diagnosed with severe asthma and “Failure to Thrive.” He was below the fifth percentile for weight and in a revolving door of desperate pediatric visits and hospitalizations, on growth-stunting steroids, antibiotics, and bronchodilators--and the pediatric and E.R. doctors couldn’t seem to help him.

I knew there had to be a way for my son and me to live healthy, happy, fully functional lives – but as I sat in the pediatrician’s office, being told again that all they had to offer was drugs, and more drugs…I realized it was up to me to find the solution.

What did I have to lose?

The short answer is: about 70 pounds and 21 disease diagnoses of my own. But what I gained is the real story:

My son and I got our lives back. No more panic attacks. No more emergency room visits. No more dangerous prescription cocktails. No more antibiotics.
My son emerged from illness and I left obesity and many diagnoses and drugs behind, by shifting to a whole-foods, mostly plant-based diet.

Now I’m on a mission to educate and empower families all over the world to be healthier and happier, despite living in an increasingly toxic world.

His studies focus on the fundamental mechanisms of aging in simple organisms and mice and on how these mechanisms can be translated to humans. The Longo laboratory has identified some of the key genetic pathways that regulate aging in simple organisms and has demonstrated that the inactivation of such pathways can reduce the incidence or progression of multiple diseases in mice and humans. His laboratory has also developed both dietary and genetic interventions that protect normal cells while sensitizing cancer cells to chemotherapy— interventions now being tested in many US and European hospitals.

The Longo laboratory recently published key findings on a 5 day periodic dietary intervention called Fasting Mimicking Diet (FMD), and showed in randomized clinical trials that FMD reduces the risk factors and markers associated with aging and diseases. Dr. Longo’s most recent studies focus on the use of FMD interventions to activate stem cell- based regeneration to promote longevity.

Wendy Myers, FDN-P, NC, CHHC

Wendy Myers, FDN-P, NC, CHHC is a Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner and an expert in detoxification and minerals. She is passionate about educating the public on the importance of long term detoxing considering our toxic world. She healed her own health issues through hair mineral analysis and developed a unique detox and supplement program. Wendy wants to help others do the same.

Wendy’s interest in nutrition began with the death of her father from esophageal cancer. Intuitively, she knew his chemo, radiation, and ten medications killed him prematurely. She vowed to find out what made him sick, why he died, what role medications played in his demise, and how she could avoid the same fate. The more Wendy learned, the more she realized that all the answers to health do not lie in our medical system. Food, detoxification and natural healing modalities must be used to compliment the advances in modern medicine.
